A Surveyor's Guide to the HP48, HP49 & HP50 calculator range

  • HP50G
Released in August 2006. The long awaited replacement (improvement) for the HP49G+. Has similar specifications to the HP49G+ with the inclusion of an RS-232 serial port to augment the USB interface. Importantly, the keyboard is significantly improved (similar to earlier models such as the HP48, HP42 and HP41). Surveyors should find this an excellent calculator to use.

  • HP48Gii
Released in early 2004. Is the replacement for the HP48G+, however comes with slightly less user memory (80.7kB) and is unexpandable. The calculator has a very fast IrDA link (compatible with HP IR printers), and an RS232 serial port (with quasi-USB interface at the calculator end). The keyboard has a much poorer build quality than previous calculators, so great care has to be taken that a key press actually registers on the screen. Binary objects and libraries from the HP49G can be used on the HP48Gii. This calculator is a good student calculator, with just enough memory to run the Version 3 Core program.

  • HP49G+ (unavailable from late 2006)
Released in late 2003. Is the flagship of the new graphing calculator range with 1.13MB of user memory, expandable with plug-in SD cards. The calculator has a very fast IrDA link (compatible with HP IR printers), and USB port. The keyboard has a much poorer build quality than previous calculators, so great care has to be taken that a key press actually registers on the screen. Binary objects and libraries from the HP49G can be used on the HP49G+.

  • HP49G (Now unavailable)
Released in 1999. The absence of an IR port renders the HP49G unsuitable for surveyors who like to output data to their IR printer. The keyboard is noticeably stiffer and less tactile than earlier HP calculators with painted rubber keys. Extensive field use will cause the lettering to wear off !

  • HP48GX (Now unavailable)
This calculator is highly recommended for extensive field use. The HP48GX comes with 128kB RAM as standard but can be expanded to about 1.5MB with the insertion of two plug-in RAM cards (costly!). The build quality is generally good, with an excellent tactile keyboard. For surveyors who are in remote areas the RAM card facility allows programs and data to be safely archived for quick retrieval in case of memory loss or accident.

  • HP48G+ (Now unavailable)
For most surveying applications the HP48G+ is more than adequate. The HP49G+ comes with 128kB standard but is not expandable. This is the most recommended calculator for office calculations or urban survey work, where the program and data can be archived onto a PC and retrieved.

  • HP48G (Now unavailable)
The HP48G has 32kB unexpandable RAM. Suitable for students only. There is insufficient memory to run all but the most elementary programs. Quickclose Standard and Expert will not run on the HP48G, however Lite versions COGOLITE and QLITE have been designed for the HP48G.

  • HP48SX (Now unavailable)
The HP48SX was the short-term predecessor to the GX and was equipped with 32kB RAM expandable to 1.3MB. Most User-RPL programs for the G series will run on the S series, but programs which include commands such as CHOOSE, INFORM & MSGBOX will not run (including Quickclose).

  • HP48S (Now unavailable)
The was equipped with 32kB unexpandable RAM. This was the student "bare-bones" calculator of the 48 series.
